Bear Management
Protecting Them & Us
Black bears are naturally curious and highly intelligent, which makes unsecured trash an easy and tempting food source. When bears learn to associate human neighborhoods with food, they can lose their natural wariness, leading to more frequent and dangerous encounters with people. This behavior often results in property damage, threats to public safety, and— tragically —the bear being relocated or euthanized. Preventing bears from accessing trash helps to keep them wild, protects communities, and ultimately saves bear lives by reducing unnecessary human–wildlife conflict. We help identify risks and provide non-lethal solutions using a modular deterrent system. This system can be used outside and away from power sources if need be.
It Starts With Food
The Source
Our garbage is the source of the issue. This seemingly small problem eventually leads to generations of bears that seek food from human sources. This is the beginning of larger issues that can plague entire communities.
The Danger
Once humans are associated with food, bears may try to gain access to structures and vehicles to find it. This can cause damage to property and even injury to people or pets. Couple this with a mother and its cubs, and the danger is apparent.
Generational
This behavior is taught to the bears’ young and becomes an ingrained behavior. The only way to prevent this from happening is properly securing food sources.
Non-Lethal Solutions
Invest in Prevention
Structural damage from bears can range from broken windows to doors pushed off their hinges. Investing in a preventative solution is a fraction of the cost compared to future issues with bear break-ins.
Deter & Defend
Options are available to deter bears from eating garbage and breaking into homes and vehicles. The electrical tile system provides a non-lethal deterrent that is safe and effective.
Local Options
Per the California Department of Wildlife’s Black Bear Conservation and Management Plan, officials will only remove a bear after it is determined to be a direct risk to human safety. This happens after incidents have already occurred. That leaves homeowners with few options until the situation has already escalated.
